It is, therefore, not surprising that the city is also home to an extraordinary community of travel and tourism professionals; and the one organization that unites all industry segments under one banner is SKÅL International.

SKÅL International has approximately 20,000 members in 450 Clubs throughout 85 nations. Membership in SKÅL comprises management professionals and executives from all branches of the travel and tourism industry, including hotels, travel agencies, airlines, ground transport, tourism media and others.

Most activities occur on a local level. The Columbus club dates back to 1966 and, like all SKÅL Clubs around the world, Columbus SKÅL is dedicated to fostering friendship and positive relations among travel professionals throughout the Columbus metropolitan area, the State of Ohio, the United States and the world.

SKÅL is not a typical business association because it is not expressly used as a forum to conduct business. However, while SKÅL does not involve itself directly in business, it does strongly encourage all “Skålleagues” to do business with each other and with SKÅL supporters.

The club’s upbeat and positive culture is well-illustrated by the very nature of its universally recognized name – SKÅL!  The word “skål” (pronounced Sk-ah-l) occurs in three Scandinavian languages meaning “cup” or “bowl,” and is commonly used as a toast, as in the English expression – Cheers!   It represents the essence of friendship and good spirits for which Skål is renowned, signified by the universal SKÅL toast:

To Fellow Skålleagues everywhere –

Happiness!     Good Health!     Friendship!     Long Life!
